Biography
Tetiana Kornieieva. Performance artist. Born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine. Studied at National Pedagogical Dragomanov University (MA in Cultural Studies) andat Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Art and Design named after Mykhailo Boychuk (BA, Decorative and Applied Arts). Co-founder of Live Art Lab - an independent performance art group based in Kyiv. She explores the topic of women identity and time, according to her personal experience, and develops the concept of performative architecture/landscape.I see how time goes by, how my forest is cut down, how the walls of the house gradually crack, those I love pass away and everything I belong to, just disappears. I focus on the topic of time, I see its physical dimension in how the world around me is changing. And I don’t really know where I am and what I belong to. I focus on the traditions in which I grew up and ask myself - what is it like to be a woman? And what does it mean to be me? When I close my eyes, I don't see myself completely. When I think of myself, I don't see myself completely. Instead, I see someone, who consists of images, cultural codes, and social patterns of behavior. I see my childhood and youth, and my memory reminds me of a time when I was a child and it seemed to me that our house and street were the whole worlds. I work with the topic of identity, analyzing, first of all, my own experience: memories, traditions formed by my family and society, facts, mostly traumatic, my attitude to the passage of time, and, consequently, old age and death. Performance is the best way to make sense of time. The main topics of my work are the understanding of my female identity through the prism of ritual and socio-cultural norms/patterns. I give the Other the opportunity to dialogue with me. I am vulnerable, I launch it into the secret recesses of my memories, and speak on vulnerable topics related to my body and sexuality. In my work, I pay big attention to tactile contact. I consider it important to feel the space not only emotionally but also physically. So, for example, I often work barefoot. For me, performance is the art of expansion, it is an opportunity to be in every corner of space, filling it with yourself and at the same time dissolving in it. I am looking for common places and researching the concept of performative architecture. Appealing to my own experience with the family home, I noticed that my relationship with architecture changed due to a time. I can no longer walk by without responding to a large crack in the window or to a bird's nest under the roof. This influenced me as an artist, so when I came to different cities in different countries, I began to observe how architecture appeared and live in the city. Gradually, cracks, graffiti appear the traffic around changes due to the construction of new roads, or, conversely, their disappearance. In my projects, related to architecture, I single out different ways of interacting with it, modifying people's memories and my own, looking for hidden facts, and understanding architecture through different senses. However, the main thing for me is the touch and the feeling of tactility, and after, creating a visual form. I try to come into close contact with the building and the urban environment. And I try to catch the Time, before the Time will catch me. Kyiv, Ukraine, 2021
